Unfortunately, this whelp did not go as planned. Yoko went into Stage I labor at 10 pm on 7/17 and kindly waiting until morning to transition in to Stage II which was her due date. Like a true Lab, she didn't read the book that said female dogs soon to go into labor lose their appetite. She ate her entire dinner that prior evening. Puppy #1 arrived easily, but puppy #2 got stuck. So the decision was made to take Yoko in for an emergency C-section. The surgery was performed at a specialty vet hospital by a board certified surgeon and he said it was a challenging C-section. Yoko did great, but unfortunately most of the pups did not prove to be viable for reasons unknown. The clinic had a huge crew standing by, along with myself and Nancy to help with puppy resuscitation, but we were only able to save 3 more pups, all boys. Yoko nursed the pups a couple of hours after surgery and was able to wobble out to the car and come home that same day. She settled in readily into the puppy pool in my bedroom and was looking very good by bedtime. She still had lots of milk and was demonstrating good maternal instincts.
